CLINICAL INFORMATION:
Adenovirus is a double-stranded DNA virus from the adeno family which causes infections of upper and lower respiratory tract, conjunctivitis, and diarrhea. Adenovirus pneumonia with a necrotizing bronchitis and bronchiolitis is relatively uncommon in healthy individuals, but may be seen in immunocompromised patients.
The incidence of adenovirus pneumonia is highest in bone marrowtransplantation recipients, intermediate in liver transplantationrecipients, and lowest in renal transplantation recipients. Oncepneumonia develops, the infection tends to disseminate and themortality is 60% to 80%.
In some cases in situ hybridization may be helpful to distinguishbetween adenovirus and cytomegalovirus infections.
CLINICAL INTERPRETATION:
A positive test is indicated by blue nuclear staining.
The results of these tests should be interpreted with the positiveand negative controls along with the other special stains and histologic examination of the hematoxylin and eosin sections.
REFERENCE VALUES:
This test, when not accompanied by a pathology consultation
request, will be answered as either positive or negative.
If additional interpretation/analysis is needed, please request
#5439 "Surgical Pathology Consultation" along with this test.
